Autism Treatment with MeRT
A Brighter Future for Your Child
An autism spectrum disorder diagnosis changes everything. It can be overwhelming for both you and your child. You want nothing more than to help your child to have a happy and productive life.
But it can be stressful to find a treatment that works. ASD treatment is not “one size fits all” and we often have parents coming to us having tried various treatments and medications without success.
That’s why we offer MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, in the treatment of autism spectrum disorder. Our doctor – Neurologist Spencer Miller, has successfully treated hundreds of patients with MeRT.
MeRT uses gentle magnetic waves to balance and stimulate brain function, guided by sophisticated diagnostics and imaging. Results from this treatment are giving many parents renewed hope for a brighter future for their children.
We have seen results such as better communication, better overall mood and more connection and control with their environment in patients. We have seen our share of miracles in the treatment of ASD where other treatments have given little or no improvement.
Non-Invasive and Drug-Free
The MeRT Approach to Autism Treatment
MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, combines three procedures:
1. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS, an FDA cleared therapy),
2. Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG), and
3. Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG).
Here’s how it works: In the brain of a child with autism, an EEG will show electrical signals that differ from those of a child with no signs of ASD. From this EEG, we can then see the specific areas to address. As a result, we can customize TMS treatment for each child based on the results of their EEG. We also tailor that treatment as to frequency, location, and power used. We do this with gentle magnetic waves which balance and stimulate brain function.
MeRT is not currently FDA cleared for autism and is considered “off-label.” However, studies have shown that it can be instrumental in helping many children develop skills to function more normally.
We had exhausted every available treatment hoping to help our daughter. Nothing worked—then we found Brain Treatment Center. MeRT changed everything for us.” – parent of a child with autism
And MeRT can be used with other therapies to help get more out of those therapies. In fact, MeRT treatment has been shown to accelerate the progress of other therapies, such as ABA.
No Two Cases of Autism Are The Same
How MeRT Can Help Improve Communication, Mood, Ability to Learn, and More
With MeRT, the EEG will show electrical signals in the brain of a child with autism that differ from those of a child who does not have ASD.
Patients with developmental differences will often have signature EEG wave activity appearing in the frontal portion of their brain, dominated by a mix of slow (delta and theta waves) and high (beta wave) frequency behavior. A neurotypical patient (one who displays typical developmental, intellectual, and cognitive abilities) would have dominant alpha waves.
MeRT works by delivering gentle magnetic pulses to specific areas of the brain, which feel like taps on the head. By doing this, we optimize brain communication, helping it to be more organized and in sync. This can allow the child to be higher functioning, and in most cases, to have better communication skills, social skills, and more independence. This, in turn, means a higher quality of life for both the patient and the caregiver.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Is Different for Every Child
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects everyone differently. Each child is unique and experiences different levels of severity. MeRT has shown significant improvements in a multitude of these different experiences.
- Would you like to see your child more open and aware of their environment?
- With improvements in behavior, learning, and communication?
- And reduction in stress and anxiety?
MeRT (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy) is a non-invasive, drug-free protocol that uses sophisticated diagnostics to develop a highly tailored treatment plan. Your child may benefit from this treatment.
MeRT uses magnetic waves to gently stimulate precisely targeted areas of the brain which can result in significant symptom improvement.
A Mother’s Story…
After two months of MeRT, Brock can now express himself in ways that he never could before. Brock is sleeping so much better and is so much more receptive to the things going on around him. He is constantly smiling, cracking jokes like never before (he was always funny but even funnier now) and just appears to be more accepting and less intimidated by the things going on in his life.
But it is what happened last night that has me typing up this novel right now… Brock has a habit of destroying the things that he loves when he gets angry. He collects things that have a lot of meaning to him personally, carries them around and organizes them pretty much daily. However, no matter how much he loves them, when he gets angry he destroys them. This is very costly for us, but has always been very traumatic for him. I always imagined that this was his way of punishing himself for getting too angry and not being able to express his hurt and anger. It has always broken my heart to watch him do this and it often would take hours for him to get over the trauma he created for himself.
Last night, I was working (like always) and my heart dropped in my chest when I heard the screams coming from the other side of the house. I opened his bedroom door expecting a disaster but, for the first time, was instead met with a room not covered in torn paper from his beloved sticker books, destroyed paintings, or broken coloring pencils and crayons. He was clearly upset, but immediately told me that he had deleted the Minecraft app on his iPad. I asked him why he did it and he told me pretty clearly, “I blew up my house. I hit the target and blew up my house. I didn’t mean to do that. I deleted all my materials and deleted Minecraft”.
Excuse me a moment while I collect myself enough to say… that my jaw hit the floor in total shock! He has never been able to give me even a one-word explanation before now without screaming at me or trying to push me out of his room; but today he gave me a small paragraph instead! Yes, he was still crying, yes he was still upset, but he TOLD ME WHY!!! Can you imagine how freakin AWESOME that was for me!!! Better yet, can you imagine how AWESOME he felt saying it???!!! In fact, after he said it, he calmed down significantly. I think he shocked himself.
After I told him I would download it again for him but he would have to fix it because I couldn’t do that for him, I told him that he didn’t have to be mad and sad at the same time anymore. He could just tell us when he was mad instead of destroying the things he loves. He listened, nodded yes, asked for a hug, grabbed his iPad, and tasked himself with repairing the things he had deleted.
We love him so much and have ever only wanted him to be happy, to see him smile and interact with the world. I think, for the first time, I can actually say he is doing pretty terrific, he is so happy, and he is ready to see what the world has to offer him for the first time ever.

What To Expect
How to Find Out More About Autism Treatment with MeRT in Oklahoma
MeRT is a relatively new treatment, so you may have many questions about whether it’s right for your child. We understand, and we’re here to make it as easy as possible for you to get the information you need. We also know that this is not a light decision to make.
Your first step is as simple as a phone consultation with our New Patient Coordinator. You can discuss symptoms and history, ask all the questions you want, and have her explain the treatment in full. This includes all fees and protocols.
Once you decide to take the next step, we then set up two separate appointments. Each of these appointments will last 45 minutes to an hour. After this, we have an assessment period where the actual procedure and monitoring take place.
EEG Testing
On your first appointment, we perform the qEEG and ECG/EKG. These tests are simple and painless and done right in our office. For the EEG, we place a cap on your child’s head to measure the electrical activity in their brain. This will map out any areas which are not performing as they should. Additionally, in the EKG, we attach electrodes to the chest to record the heart’s electrical signals.
Once we perform the test, our team will carefully analyze the test results. Based on this analysis, we develop a treatment plan customized to your child’s specific condition and schedule their assessment period of treatment.
Consultation
Your second appointment, after your qEEG/EKG, is a one-on-one consultation. You and your child can do this either in person or virtually from the comfort of your home. We will discuss your test results and treatment protocols, answer any questions you may have, and let you know more about what to expect during your child’s assessment period of treatment.
Assessment Period
The next step is the Assessment Period, where we will perform a short period of treatment, followed by a new EEG to see how the patient is responding to the treatment. We determine progress based on the new EEG results compared to the initial one done and symptom improvements.
If there is a positive response to treatment during the assessment period, you will have likely noticed some improvements starting to take place. At that point, we will schedule additional MeRT treatment in two-week intervals.
At the end of every two weeks, we will perform a qEEG/EKG to monitor your child’s progress; you will have a consultation to confirm that changes are still showing on the testing.
Most conditions treated with MeRT provide noticeable and long-lasting results after four to eight weeks of treatment; however, each patient is different, and results may vary.

Those on the moderate-to-severe end of the spectrum will have problems with communication and social skills. The teenage years can also bring increased issues stemming from behavior and hormonal changes during this time.
