Breakthrough Treatment for Anxiety Disorder
Is your constant anxiety getting in the way of living your life? There is hope. MeRT (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy) is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment that can help relieve anxiety symptoms by improving brain function and communication.
If you’re experiencing anxiety more often these days, and if that anxiety won’t go away, you’re not alone. Anxiety is the most common mental health disorder in the United States. In fact, the National Institutes of Health reports that 19.1% of US adults have experienced an anxiety disorder in the last year. And 31% will have an anxiety disorder in their lifetime.
Many anxiety treatments exist; however, sometimes, they don’t work as you’d hoped. Or perhaps the side effects are just too difficult to deal with. That’s when your anxiety, worry, and panic attacks can be overwhelming — and you may feel like you have to live with them forever.
But you don’t. At Brain Treatment Partners Oklahoma, we offer a breakthrough treatment for anxiety disorders. This non-invasive, drug-free treatment is called MeRT or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy. It’s gentle, effective, and can achieve lasting results.*
The MeRT Approach to Anxiety Treatment
MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, is a breakthrough in treating anxiety. It begins with comprehensive diagnostic testing using an EEG (electroencephalogram) to map the brain and discover any areas where the brain is not functioning optimally.
Then, using a tailored program of TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation), we deliver gentle magnetic pulses to the precise areas of the brain found to be out of sync.
The EEG is key to the success of the MeRT treatment. That’s because patients with an anxiety disorder can have markers we can clearly see in their EEG studies that show an imbalance in brainwave activity. Then, through a highly personalized treatment plan, we strengthen healthy brainwave activity.
This treatment can result in a major reduction of anxiety symptoms — and the results are lasting.
“We’re really seeking to balance the function of the brain.”
Highly esteemed neurologist, Dr. Spencer O. Miller, oversees all treatment at Brain Treatment Partners Oklahoma. Dr. Miller has extensive experience with MeRT treatment, and explains how this treatment works to balance brain function:
When you optimize the brain, the brain is seeking equilibrium, homeostasis, or a low energy state in which to operate. An aberrancy or dysfunction of the brain actually requires energy for the brain to kind of realign itself. And when you’re using that extra energy, it fatigues the brain. It makes the brain not operate optimally. It makes you confused and tired and lack understanding. This is very similar to nutrition: If you don’t have the right nutrition, the balance just isn’t there. We’re really seeking to balance the function of the brain.”
What are Anxiety Disorders?
We all experience anxiety at different times in life. Maybe you have to give a presentation and are afraid of speaking in front of a crowd. Or you’re meeting someone for the first time and don’t know how it will go. This type of anxiety is normal.
With an anxiety disorder, however, the feelings of worry, fear, and panic don’t go away and can be out of proportion to the actual situation. Anxiety disorders include panic attacks, agoraphobia, social phobia, and even anxiety brought on by a medical condition.
Generalized anxiety disorder can be even more difficult to deal with. This is when you have excessive worry or fear about “ordinary” life experiences. This worry can be constant and can completely consume you.
Nobody knows exactly what causes anxiety disorders. However, they can be genetic, triggered by certain traumatic life events, or a side effect of certain medications.
Anxiety Disorder Symptoms
- Insomnia or other sleep issues
- Hyperventilation or shortness of breath
- Increased heart rate
- Feeling nervous or tense
- Having a sense of impending danger or doom
- Shaking, trembling, or muscle twitching
- Weakness or exhaustion
- Inability to concentrate or focus
- Gastrointestinal difficulties
- Avoiding anxiety triggers (people or situations)
If you’re experiencing anxiety disorder symptoms that won’t resolve, MeRT may be a solution. Many patients treated with MeRT have seen a significant reduction in their anxiety symptoms, even when medications or other forms of therapy haven’t helped.*
MeRT Treatment for Anxiety at Brain Treatment Partners Oklahoma
MeRT is a relatively new treatment, so you may have many questions about whether it’s the right treatment for your anxiety. We understand, and we’re here to make it as easy as possible for you to get the information you need. We also know that this is not a light decision to make.
Your first step is as simple as a phone consultation with our New Patient Coordinator. You can discuss symptoms and history, ask all the questions you want, and have her explain the treatment in full. This includes all fees and protocols.
Once you decide to take the next step, we then set up two separate appointments. Each of these appointments will last 45 minutes to an hour. After this, we have an assessment period where the actual procedure and monitoring take place.
Diagnostic Testing
At your first appointment, we perform a qEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram, or brain mapping) and ECG/EKG (electrocardiogram). You will receive these simple, painless tests right in our office. For the qEEG, we place a cap on your head to measure the electrical activity in your brain. This will map out any areas which are not performing as they should. And for the EKG, we attach electrodes to your chest to record the heart’s electrical signals.
Once we complete the testing, our team will carefully analyze the results. Based on this analysis, we will develop a treatment plan customized to your specific condition and schedule your assessment period of treatment.
Consultation
Your second appointment, after your testing, is a one-on-one consultation. You can do this either in person or virtually from the comfort of your home. We will discuss your test results and treatment protocols, answer questions you may have, and let you know more about what to expect during your assessment period of treatment.
Assessment Period
The next step is the Assessment Period, where we will perform a short period of treatment, followed by a new qEEG to see how you are responding to the treatment. We determine progress based on the new EEG results compared to the initial one done and symptom improvements.
If there is a positive response to treatment during the assessment period, you will have likely noticed some improvements starting to take place. At that point, we will schedule additional MeRT treatment in two-week intervals.
At the end of every two weeks, we will perform a qEEG/EKG to monitor your progress; you will have a consultation to confirm that changes are still showing on the testing.
Most conditions treated with MeRT provide noticeable and long-lasting results after four to eight weeks of treatment; however, each patient is different, and results may vary.
